Port of Tanjung Perak is located in the city of Surabaya. Strategic location makes this port one of important ports in eastern Indonesia. This port is also a liaison with the city of Surabaya other cities in Indonesia.
Tanjung Perak is one harbor gateway in Indonesia. As the gateway, hence
Tanjung Perak have become the center collector and goods distributor to
east Indonesia area especially for East Java province.
Because its strategic located and supported by hinterland area the
potential East Java is Tanjung Perak harbor that also as the center sea
transport of east Indonesi. Ahead, Ocean ships unload and load its
goods through lighters and boats, which can reach Jembatan Merah (the
first port by then) that reside in Surabaya city through Kalimas River.
Because the development of commerce traffic and goods improvement, also
the increasing of current transportation, hence the dock facilities in
Jembatan Merah is not fallen short.
Then in 1875, Ir.W. De Jongth compiled a development plan of Tanjung
Perak harbor in order to give the opportunity to the ocean ships to
unload and load directly without lighters and boats help. However this
plan is then refused because the cost is too high.
Has just at first ten years in 20th century, I. WB. Van Goor made a
realistic plan that emphasizing a compulsion for ocean ships to close
its ship at dock. Two experts are invited from Netherland that is
Prof.DR.J Kraus and GJ. De Jongth to give a suggestion about the
execution of development plan of Tanjung Perak harbor.
After 1910, hence the development of Tanjung Perak harbor is started.
During its development, there are a lot of demand for apply dock, which
have not been entirely completed. Thereby, hence it had executed its
expansion. Since at that time, Tanjung Perak harbor has given a big
contribution for the economic development and has important role, not
only for the improvement of commerce traffic in East Java but is also
all of east Indonesia area.
In this development period, the expansions effort always done by
Tanjung Perak harbor that aimed to dock extension, especially the
container dock, extension and completion facilities, expansion of
industrial in harbor area, the passenger terminal development and the
other facilities that related to modern port development.
