Global warming is causing rising sea levels affect the breeding turtles, one of the protected animals. I Wayan Wiradnyana, turtle protection campaign coordinator ProFauna Indonesia talked about the impact of global warming and the threat of hunting humans:
Global warming has felt the impact on turtle rescue. We had to relocate
turtle eggs from their natural place to hatcheries that are not
submerged in sea water.
The possibility of natural nests already exist that can not hatch eggs because the warmer temperatures due to global warming.
This we did because when high tides, natural nests will be immersed in sea water, which will result in turtle eggs do not hatch.
Kuta community who act as task force coast guard, we were trained to
participate in the efforts to rescue hundreds of hatchlings or young
turtles that hatch along the beaches of Kuta this.
One of his very active in efforts to protect sea turtles is the head of task force members Kuta, I Gusti Ngurah Tresna.
"From April to September (during nesting turtles) we managed to raise about five thousand more eggs," he said.
From a thousand eggs that hatch, only one can survive while only reached
the level of adult turtles to lay eggs again in thirty years.
Another impact of global warming
Besides causing her submerged turtle eggs, global warming also influences the sex of sea turtles.
The number of male turtle will decrease as the temperature when the parent spawning levels affect gender.
In the last three years the number of eggs that successfully hatched
approximately eight thousand heads hatchlings in captivity ProFauna two
places in Kuta Bali and Tegal Besar, Klungkung.
"After we tetaskan, we wait a few days, and we invite the community and
tourists to release the hatchlings tail of this, together to the sea."
Community support
Besides the threat of global warming, sea turtles are also still not be
separated from the threat of human hunting for meat, karapaks, and eggs.
Therefore, we engage the community to raise awareness about turtle
protection. Of the seven species that exist in this world, six of them
are in Indonesia.
One of the educators and community leaders who are active in efforts to protect sea turtles in Klungkung is Wayan Mega Arthur.
"We insert in the class the importance of nature conservation,
particularly in the surrounding environment. We at Klungkung, we were
talking about turtles, beaches, rivers, and birds," said Wayan Mega
Arthur.
ProFauna also visited various schools to provide information about the
protected animals is for the students aware of the importance of
protecting sea turtles.
Head of the Natural Resources Conservation Center Bali Istanto said it
has asked the relevant parties to pay attention to development around
the coast.
"Development on the edge of the beach is the authority of others, and we
called for development on the beach should be limited and determined
for the special zone where turtle nesting is not disturbed," said
Istanto.
Istanto said so far numbers turtle hunting by humans has been very much
reduced, with strict supervision and a number of cases have also been
brought to court.
